Historique :	Oeuvre exécutée en 1803 par Jacques Bestieu, né à Montpellier le 22 août 1754 et mort dans la même ville le 8 mai 1842. Elève de Coustou, Vien et Restout, il termine son éducation artistique à Rome où il réside plusieurs années. En janvier 1786, il remplace Jules Roques comme Directeur artistique des Beaux Arts de Montpellier. Plus tard il est nommé professeur de l'Ecole Centrale de Dessin du département de l'Hérault. En 1804, la municipalité de Montpellier le choisit comme conservateur de la collection de tableaux réunie à l'Hôtel de Ville, embryon du futur musée de peinture.
